Dental Care for Children and Adolescents

Baby teeth are important and need proper care. These teeth help your child to eat and speak properly. Healthy teeth look good and are important for self confidence. They also help retain space for the eruption of permanent teeth, which helps prevent crowding.

Here are a few tips from the NZDA (New Zealand Dental Association) for dental care to our children:

    Tips for a healthy smile

    • Start brushing the baby teeth as soon as they come through the gums
    • Brush twice a day with a smear of fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush
    • Choose healthy, tooth friendly snacks
    • Avoid giving soft drinks and sugary, sticky snacks
    • Lift your child’s lip every month to check for signs of tooth decay
    • Enrol your child at a dental clinic and have regular dental check-ups
    • Most children would require extra parental help with their oral hygiene routines until they turn around 8 years old

The Community Dental Service provides free dental care for eligible children living in Canterbury and South Canterbury.

To enrol your child, book an appointment, or update contact details, please call 0800 846 983 or email commdental@cdhb.health.nz

If you think your child needs an emergency dental care and the Community Dental Service could not give you an appointment, you are free to call us and arrange an appointment for no cost. Same applies to any emergency dental appointment for children at any age during school holidays as well.

We can further organise a referral for your child to a right specialist (paediatric dentists or orthodontists) when more complex treatment is required.
